ZombieVirus-Ready Movie Themed TOYOTA TACOMA… is in search of a Movie

Color some Hollywood Movie Cars if you dare…

Not sure everything works on this Toyota Tacoma, but if I were currently working on a ZOMBIE TOYOTAPOCALYPSE, I’d sure be all over this.

Although it’s pretty clean and available on Bring A Trailer, it would probably cause a few coronaries on the highway.

A week in the 2020 TOYOTA 4RUNNER TRD PRO…

Honestly, TOYOTAS don’t really get me all excited for the most part. I’m always feeling like they need more horsepower or design identity. Not sure they understand the American market as much as others.

That is… until I drove this 2020 TOYOTA 4RUNNER TRD PRO. Capable. That’s what I’d call her. Driven to perform on and off-road in a way that really surprised me. And the “green” was an added bonus that no matter where I went, people felt it was fresh.

Maybe it lacked the brashness of other big trucks? Maybe it suggested that it was understood and had empathy for the environment? Maybe… it was just green. ARMY GREEN.

I don’t know… it just made me feel like I wanted to put a big white star on the door and drive pretty much ANYWHERE.

Where the 4Runner is a bit challenged… is in it’s $52K price tag and 17mpg. Especially this coming from a company building ELECTRIC and massive Hybrid Cars. But… I’m sure the 4RunnerEV will be next, so complaining about it now doesn’t do much good.

I drove around Malibu with utter confidence that if FIRE, FLOOD, VIRUS or BAD DRIVERS entered my Toyota bubble, I’d lay the smack-down. But, the most I really did was scoot my grand daughter around town for picnics and groceries. Missed op, but even Generals in the Army have HoneyDoos.

Inside the 4Runner, it still feels a bit outdated and it is. Then again, freshness is right around the corner. But for a bit-out-of-date interior, the functionality still hooked up.

It’s a V6 so it can scoot, but where the fun really begins is with a snorkel and the Yukon Trail. It’s clear that this version is able to handle virtually any off road excursion. But it’s probably best suited to the Mountain Biker with Zion Dreams in his sights.

Rugged, fun, roomy and able to carry a ton of grocer…. I mean, construction equipment and Hardcore Mountain Climbing Gear.

But the green man, the green. People just get out of the way and don’t want to have ANYTHING to do with you. Some of the waves that came in also felt like I was on my way to Fort Point for some recon.

I love the 4Runner. It’s just plain cool and fun to drive. Although… $52K is a lot to spend on a 17mpg truck right now. Maybe it fits, maybe it doesn’t. But it’s certainly the last of a dying breed of gas land cruiser. You decide…

Design Review – The 2020 TOYOTA SEQUOIA TRD PRO is challenged to stay relevant…

My initial response to the design balance between the exterior and interior language of the 2020 TOYOTA SEQUOIA TRD was a big surprise. It seemed like 2 teams from different parts of the world had handled each project without talking to each other. But then… the more I drove it, I started to see some connections.

At first glance, the Sequoia’s exterior is ruff n’ tumble. All truck, big, tough and very competent. Everywhere I went, people seemed to really like it. And the Army Green paint begged for Military Stars on the doors. Had it come with that, I’d pretty much feel that I had Carte Blanc to go anywhere.

It’s muscular yet graceful in a Boot Camp sort of way. No surprises, and you get what you pay for at $65K. Yes, you heard me right… $65K.

But that’s when things started to go south a bit for me. I really like the simplicity of the exterior design, but $65,000 gets you a big SUV truck that was designed over 10 years ago and comes with an interior… well, an interior that like the last Lexus I drove previously, needs a serious upgrade.

Lots of plastic, in fact it was 99% plastic. At almost a Luxury Truck price, I felt that wood, steel, chrome or gold leaf should have been in order here. Something. Anything. But no, the Truck is bare-boned plastic on the interior.

The final straw was the surprisingly low 14mpg. Now, I understand that things will get better with Toyota and I’m not bashing the Sequoia. In fact, all I need to do to get a small perspective is shift and go back 10 years.

When this truck first came out, it was badass. And all you have to do is forget about what’s been done in the last decade and the truck will be awesome once again. But competition is fierce these days and trucks need to measure up. Toyota is gonna need to step up their game if they want to be taken seriously.

Sure, a 5.7l dohc 32valve iForce V8 sounds epic. And it DOES haul ass, but Toyota knows what it needs to do to compete in the globalEV and awareness market. Let’s see if they do and whether the badassness will continue.

A week in the 2019 TOYOTA 86GT…

Who says that fun and fast can’t be had on a budget? Sure, new budget cars are not what they used to be, but since the average price for an average car is about $30K, we have to be realistic with the times.

I drive a lot of cars. Many of which are at $30K and many at $90K. But if you’re out there looking for some fun and don’t have a lot of dough to plunk, then the 2019 TOYOTA 86GT may just be one of your best options.

Manual all the way, this is a fun canyon carver and track car. Plus fully modifiable, the 86GT can put a permanent smile on your face for the day and give your passenger a combination of thrills and nausea (the good kind).

With fairly good gas mileage at 27mpg average and a 2.0l 4-cylinder boxer DOHC 16v, the 2019 Toyota GT whips up 200hp and is just enough to risk entering The Ticket Factory if you’re not careful. Best to get it in a color that doesn’t attract sharks.

Final assembly in Japan at their OTA Gunma Plant, the cars pepper the US as stepping stones to greater rides like the NSX and new Vette. But like I said, for fun on a budget, the 86GT is all sorts of mean and can’t be beat.

Luckily, I only had this car for a week and my right foot didn’t really get a chance to go into “Dark Force Mode.” But if you’re smart, you’ll head to Buttonwillow or Willow Springs to get your groove on.

In many areas, Toyota is still challenged in it’s design language, especially interiors. But the 86GT is working through its paces and the ’19 model is more refined and more fun. I’d give it a chance as a test drive and let it speak to you. Just bring a barf bag for the Salesman. 😉

This is the TOYOTA MOON ROVER launching in 2029…

Tokyo, Japan, March 12, 2019―The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announce their agreement today to consider the possibility of collaborating on international space exploration. As a first step, JAXA and Toyota have reached agreement to further cooperate on and accelerate their ongoing joint study of a manned, pressurized rover that employs fuel cell electric vehicle technologies. Such a form of mobility is deemed necessary for human exploration activities on the lunar surface. Even with the limited amount of energy that can be transported to the moon, the pressurized rover would have a total lunar-surface cruising range of more than 10,000 km.
