Swing on into Malibu’s WHEELS AND WAVES this Sunday morning…

That’s right, my Wheels and Waves Cars & Coffee event will be at the Malibu Country Mart from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. this Sunday, Aug. 20.

In past months, we’ve had more than 160 cars from all over Southern California converge into Malibu for this brisk morning show. Classic cars, muscle cars, vintage bombs, hot rods, trucks, one seriously massive military vehicle and some crazy rat rods.

Plus, we get the gambit of celebrities and we have been graced (for two hours) with Malibuite Dick Van Dyke. Past shows welcomed Keanu Reeves, Jonathan Banks, Tony Dow and others.

It’s a blessing to be able to create an event where people can share what they love most.

Our 21-mile stretch houses some of the most spectacular cars on the planet and we see them every day. It’s inspiring to pull them together and create a space where we can converse and swap stories of what we’ve seen, heard and built.

We’ve had Dow’s 1965 Corvair premiere at Wheels and Waves after a 50-year hiatus. We’ve watched a hand-built copper and brass rat rod, built by blacksmith Joe Magliato, enter.

We’ve heard a 600-horsepower Porsche built by WIKD Kustoms, who is now restoring Dow’s Corvair! We’ve watched Chuck Schauwecker’s Japanese hot rod called “Rodriguez” glide in, as well as many cars from The Automobile Driving Museum and Murphy Auto Museum.

Personally, I’ll be bringing in something special (a classic truck) from the Murphy this Sunday.

Plus, not only will we be premiering a new sound system from WIKD, but this month’s sponsor is Croftgate Santa Barbara; they make waterless car care products that are awesome.

They will be the reason that the first 100 cars will get free coffee, so be sure to thank them.

As always, I’ll have the “red bag of doom” filled with Hot Wheels where you’ll be able to reach in and hopefully not get bit by something!

The show is expanding from the Malibu Country Mart into the Malibu Village lot where there’s over 500 spaces. There’s plenty of room to house car clubs.

But I would be remiss to not thank those who already attend this awesome show.

Your passion for car culture is keeping it alive and helping it reach new, younger generations. The fun of seeing friends and making new ones expands not only our love of cars, but also of each other.

This is Malibu, and we only do things one way: the cool way.

The Gift and sometimes Curse of PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY…

The Gift and sometimes Curse of PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY…

As some of you may know, I was present when the local woman was hit and killed on PCH last month. It was a tremendously sad situation, but a reminder of the truths of our road. It’s not really a highway, but a freeway.

As a rule, I do my best to keep the focus on the positive for these articles and I’ve met and spoke with many of you here in town that have expressed to me the concern of responsible action on PCH.

But since we know that common sense isn’t really all that common, and many of the accidents on PCH happen with those that don’t live here, it’s never a bad thing to remind all of us how important it is to be present, grateful and giving to each other.

For those who understand and those who strive to, the idea that what makes your life happy is just to give happiness into the world is a crucial concept.

I was very fortunate to have Dick Van Dyke as a guest of my Wheels and Waves Show two weekends ago — and spending some quality time with him solidified the truths of kindness, being present and being happy. He is a champion of Malibu and represents what we all need to adopt in our little town.

But when tragedy hits close, we get a clear reminder that responsibility is important as we ride through life. Realizing that when we get in our cars, how we act and what we do in them is the seed of success. Now, speed limits are there not to actually limit us, but to help us enjoy our lives fully and not suffer from anxiety.

But speeding is generally earmarked for those that are experiencing fear on some level, right? Fear of being late, of missing something, of the stresses of work. And a simple answer to that is to leave earlier.

But many will give all sorts of excuses why they can’t … until it’s too late and something bad happens. And if you speed, it will. But again, the truth is that you can, you must and need to see life as a joyous time that we are given by God to experience all the best aspects. And to share those experiences with each other.

It’s one of my most favorite things to go up into town, see people and talk cars. Share the journeys we have and the experiences of life on PCH. It’s not meant to be a scary thing, but a lifeline to beauty and giving.

It’s why so many come here on the weekends. But we, as Malibuites, don’t have to drive to get everything she has to offer as we live here.

Taking responsibility for our actions is actually a gift. An ever present conscious realization that if we do it right, we’ll be given a journey, a ride, an experience of a lifetime, literally.

So, if you see me in town or in a cool car, give me the thumbs up or a wave and let me know that you’re on board this automotive ark. Let me know that you love this town as much as I do and will do your part to keep it safe, fun and beautiful. It’s a little corner of the world, but it’s our corner.

EARTH DAY celebration kicks off with a new Library…

What a great Sunday, yesterday. Kicked off with a great dedication to the new Eco-Library with Master of Ceremonies and locals Pierce Brosnan and a hilarious speech by Dick Van Dyke. And I mean hysterical, as he always is. Malibu’s gone without a Library for a while due to the renovation, but now… it’s wicked cool. I’ll post interior shots later, but if you come to the Bu for coffee, it’ll be worth the trip to swing in.

Places like this are so important for kids. Even big ones like us. They literally save people. And if you don’t believe that, read up on Og Mandino. His choice was to go buy a gun and end it, or go into the Library and get warm. Because of his choice, he ended up writing many books that sold millions and changed everything.

Spend some time in your local Library. And insert some peace into your life. Who knows, you may be driving a Bugatti like this dood…

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for a cool mil…

A few weeks ago, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang appeared at the shop, ready to be auctioned and was shipped in from Europe. It was flawless. But to a big surprise, it didn’t sell. Maybe because it was selling for a cool million or two. Who knows. (Watch me while I just whip out a check, yo. Then b-line this puppy up PCH for a fish sandwich at Malibu Seafood.)

Not many people know that the story of Chitty was from an original book by James Bond author, Ian Fleming. What was it about Fleming that he liked cars so much? Bond’s movies are full of them. Especially a flying, sea-going, cool boat tailed wonder like Chitty. And half the Aston’s in Malibu have the passenger seat launch capability.

If you haven’t seen the movie, Netflix it. Worth it for the car, and for Malibu buddy Dick Van Dyke. He’s pretty cool, too. (Dick, if you read this, I’m gonna need you to sign the dashboard…)
