I whisk a 2015 MAZDA MIATA MX-5 for a week…

2015Miata_FireballTim.com

It’s easy to forget how much fun a convertible can be. And how much like a Go-kart a Miata can be…

I first drove the Miata back in the early 90’s when my brother and I took a rental car into a parking lot and practiced fishtailing. It was so much like a Go-kart that we could get inches from a fence and not think twice. Now, I didn’t do that in this 2015 MAZDA MIATA MX-5 and I wouldn’t admit it if I did. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun.

There are a lot of things about this car that I really don’t gel with, but seeing as how the 2016 model is coming out shortly and is slightly more pissed off, it doesn’t do much good to elaborate on the bad. I’d just say, wait for the ’16. Why? Simple. What doesn’t work is the Guppy Face, bad ergonomics inside and lack of serious fun horsepower. The Guppy I can deal with as it’s not looking at me in the mirror and the hp is adequate to hit the canyons for some fun. Good fun. (We always want more.) But the ergonomics are pretty horrible in that if you put a bottle of water into the cup holder, you can’t shift the car. That is 1 out of about 10. BUT…

All that gets made up for in sheer convertible fun as a California car. The Miata is small and benefits by being small. Easy to drive, park, see out of and zoom. The top goes down fast, the grip is tight and the response is heavenly. All worth the price of admission. Stats? It’s get 24mpg, about $27K for this Grand Touring version and 167hp which would better if it were 230. Just sayin.’

As a toy, which this car is, you have way more fun than you should be allowed to have and it’s all GO from there. (Wait, did I just say that?) Ok, put it this way… This is a very happy guppy. And as a result, you’re gonna feel the same way.

But still wait for the ’16.

MOTOR PRESS GUILD design event goes off at the Petersen…

The other night, I attended an event for the MOTOR PRESS GUILD featuring awesome designers for various car companies. BMW Designworks, VW, Kia and my good friend Derek Jenkins, Chief Designer for MAZDA. (Derek has a Dune Buggy that’s insane, but more on that later…) The discussion involved the differences between Asian, European and American design philosophies, although the guys discussed cultural differences regarding cars, too. It was cool. They all have some great designs coming…

We chowed, checked out the new Aerodynamics Exhibit at the museum and talked with the press.

Mazda Press Event highlights MAZDASPEED Motorsports…

Great day yesterday as our team converged down south with our friends at Mazda. (Pictured are my Lt’s Max Musina and Scott Loyola and MAZDA Motorsports Communications Officer, Dean Case) Dean did a great job at putting the event together and highlighting all the great things that MAZDA is doing in motorsports. And I was pleasantly surprised to meet their team… of 17-year olds!! BWA!!!!???

17 and racing full bore Mazda’s?? …Awesome. These guys are having such a blast that their excitement was infectious. Imagine, being a kid and getting to play with cars like these? So frikkin’ cool I can hardly stand it.

Event took place at the Crevier Classic Car Museum in Costa Mesa which was filled with a great collection. But the MicroBus’ were what I’d steal, given half the chance. Although there were a few million dollar cars blocking the way. Dangit!

Mazda is speeding up to have a great 2012 in Motorsports. Keep an eye on them.

LA Auto Show in GREENS…

Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety, like smacking your car into a tree. Another things that is green. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Cool.

Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a ‘greenhorn’ is a novice or dood that is clueless. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic. As in, HIT IT!

Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote ‘green’ products. Like, at the show, duh. As I said, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street. Oh, …and grapes.
