What’s it like to ride a 1979 BMW R100S CAFE RACER?

Ok, now begins a new phase of Ride of the Week. Let’s call it “Leveling Up.” Or maybe ROTW Ver2.0. And what does that mean?

It means that, although four wheels are cool, two can be cool, too. In fact, taking a ride in just about anything in Malibu is completely awesome and I’ll be proving that in the next few weeks when I take a spin in Malibu Engine 70’s Fire Truck for a 5Minute Drive upcoming episode.

But for now, welcome Matthew Burgess and his 1979 BMW R100S. A re-imagined Café Racer custom built by Deus ex Machina in Venice. It’s so cool, that Matthew even gave it a name — Complexus ex Simplex; Latin for “complexity from simplicity,” and with a nod to “God from the Machine.”

As an Internet entrepreneur, Matthew is a complex guy. Just describing what he does gets my ears a-twerkin’. Most recently he co-founded a company which uses a proprietary analytics platform to optimize high volume e-commerce sites and marketing campaigns. (See, I told you. I can see your ears moving like a hummingbird finding a 12-foot flower.)

“We embrace an approach where complexity can emerge from simplicity,” Burgess said. “Where both creative and analytical modes of thinking work in harmony to accelerate testing, learning and improvement of ROI. I call this approach Creatalytics.” I call it wow for short.

Me? I just act like an dork and get paid for it.

But Matthew, despite his double sized business card, is an altogether different individual when he’s on two wheels. He becomes a hyper-centered, laser pointed spiritual seeker of curves. Like riding a big wave, there’s no room to be distracted in cruising a two wheeled demon. You have to commit or get swallowed up, which is why my wife lays down the law to four wheels for me. But Matthew’s passion for what Venice’s Deus ex Machina built for him rivals true art.

A spectacular piece that would otherwise belong parked or hanging on the wall in your living room.

“I’d been talking with the folks at Deus about building a bike for some time, since before they opened the shop in Venice. I love the 1970’s BMW R-series, and Deus hadn’t yet customized a BMW. So we talked about building a café racer from a vintage BMW,” Burgess said.

“I searched the country for a good donor bike for the project, and I finally found it in Prescott, Arizona a couple years ago. I flew out to buy the bike and ride it back. After an overnight side trip to Sedona (it was love at first ride), I rode it back to LA, and to Deus ex Machina, where we planned its transformation.”

He continued on to say that it was a bit heart wrenching to tear down such a beautiful R100S, which is something of a legendary bike. But he was energized by the vision of Michael Woolaway (the lead builder for Deus in the US) to create a one-of-a-kind BMW. So off it went to Woolie’s Workshop in Venice.

Matthew describes that the rear brake was converted from a disc to a drum. Pretty much all the components on the bike were handmade by Woolie: The battery was relocated under the seat. A NASA-developed 1,200-degree heat shield was added under the seat, protecting both the battery and my man parts from the heat of the engine and exhaust.

“As a member of the Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club, my heart is with vintage bikes. Although I ride it frequently into Venice, it’s not really the best commuter bike. It’s tight and fast with an aggressive stance; endless fun in the canyons around Malibu. Complexus ex Simplex is ‘complexity from simplicity,’ the emergence of beauty and elegance from simple things/forms/patterns, as embodied in the Fibonacci sequence of numbers, the golden ratio, and as seen throughout nature.

This concept is representative of something that has always helped me get my head around the great unknowns of our universe and guides me in life: the empirical truth that great complexity in nature emerges from simplicity. Riding a motorcycle is an experiential manifestation of this: the joy, the peace, and the complex, textured richness of life’s experiences that often come from the simplest of things. Surfing has this same effect on me.”

With his wife Shana and their two-year-old son, Gavin, they moved to Point Dume last year after a dozen years in Venice. They spent a good amount of time in Malibu over the years, surfing and riding motorcycles through the canyons, getting to know the neighborhoods, people, etc. So he’d known for some time that he wanted to raise his family here.

“Every day we are filled with humility and gratitude for the opportunity to live in this amazing place. We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of others and open arms of the community.”

It kind of makes you feel like getting on a bike, eh? But isn’t that the way of the universe? Isn’t that what we love about our big, little town? A connection with beauty, passion and inner peace… and don’t forget all things cool.

MAGNUM PI FERRARI, Brando, Sorcery, Pinups & AWESOME ART!!

Welcome to AUTOMOTIVE POP CULTURE DAILY!! It’s Monday and that means that PI’s are on the case! So let’s start with a super cool Fireball MAGNUM PI FERRARI MASTERPRINT!! Maybe his “stache” needs it’s own Netflix Series??

DID YOU KNOW?? The iconic red Ferrari driven by Magnum had to be modified to fit Selleck’s frame, including removing the padding from the seat. It was originally supposed to be a Porsche, but it couldn’t be appropriately modified… so the Ferrari took its place. Three Ferraris were used over the show’s eight seasons, each with the license plate “ROBIN 1”- Season 1: 1979 308 GTS – Seasons 2-6: 1981 308 GTSi – Seasons 7-8: 1984 308 GTSi quattrovalvole.

Also in today’s TROPICAL BLAST… Hollywood Icon MARLON BRANDO gives out a SIG from what Car? The Jerry-Rigged MOVIE CAR from the campy, cheesy METAL STORM: THE DESTRUCTION OF JARED SYN! (Richard Band composed and recorded the score for this B-Movie in eleven days and it was Tim Thomerson’s first film for Charles Band. The late Richard Moll (who played Hurok) was discovered and cast by the producers of Night Court in 1984 for the role of Bull Shannon, the towering bailiff, while shooting this film. He shaved his head for the role and the producers of Night Court liked the look so much that Moll continued to shave his head for the show! Metal Storm combined elements of a western, post-apocalyptic, science fiction and sorcery. Wow!

PLUS… Fireball’s kick-ass 1992 SKETCHBOOK COVER ART, a SHOUT OUT SNAP with amazing artist HEATHER EDWARDS of THE DOG AND DRAGON, Fireball with the ROLLS ROYCE build for Nicholas Cage’s THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE, a stunning Latina Fireball PINUP and Fireball Pal NETTIE (@orangekrush64) from SEMA 2024!

GILLEN AUSTRALIA F1, Wagons, Bats, TBirds & Vintage ‘F’ Ball

Good morning Fireballers! Today is a SPECIAL BLAST with a cool series coming, starting with the all-new GILLEN AUSTRALIA FORMULA 1 2047! Brendan Gillen is out Melbourne and helps people through the ECommerce Academy to build their Shopify Stores… and is a huge fan of F1 Racing. It was time he had his own team…😉 Check him out if you’re wanting the best in an ECommerce Business! Amazing….

DID YOU KNOW?? The fastest speed ever in a race was 231.5 miles per hour! The sound is around 130 decibels, and the designs of the cars helps to cut through the air faster (although being bald would help) and the G-Forces can only be matched by a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica! Whoosh!

Also in today’s Fireball Blast, the Ball whipsnaps a Classic Heavily Modified EDSEL WAGON, spirits the original BAT66 as a MASTERPRINT, reveals that ALL FIREBALL SKETCHES actually start out HAND DRAWN and not CG… and wraps with Fireball’s Vintage first car… a 1979 VOLKSWAGEN DASHER. Now is completely and unfathomably hard to find. But he’s still looking…

And lastly, the TUMBLER jumps into action ON SET in the CHICAGO UNDERGROUND and Fireball’s BEST OF SHOW EPISODE reveals a stunning TBIRD from Cruisin’ for a Cure last weekend! Thank you, Debbie Baker! Winna…

TRUCKSTER, ’67 Charger, Jade Idol, 600, Knievel & CLOCKWORK!

As of this BLAST, the NATIONAL LAMPOON FAMILY TRUCKSTER is in the #1 slot for fans of the Garage and it’s easy to know why… ’cause it’s just frikkin’ cool, that’s what! And if you’ve seen the movie, then all you want to do is buy a Wagon and hit the road!

BUT DID YOU KNOW?? A heavily-modified 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire Station Wagon, the design, and cringe-worthy title of Wagon Queen Family Truckster were the brainchild of George Barris. Five Wagon Queens were built for the movie, primarily to be wrecked for the vehicle’s never-ending series of mishaps. For the iconic ‘turn off the highway scene’, stunt coordinator Dick Ziker made a bet against other crew members that he would be able to jump the Family Truckster more than 50 feet before crashing into the desert floor. Ziker won the bet. Ouch.

Also in today’s blast, Fireball scoots a ’67 Dodge Charger along PCH in search of Car Shows, a super hot SKETCH of Gene Winfield’s JADE IDOL smack outta his Coloring Book, Fireball’s rendition of Jeff Styles’ EVEL KNIEVEL VAN that’s premiering at SEMA this year and a CELEB SHOT of Malcolm McDowell and the car from A CLOCKWORK ORANGE! Robin Gibbons lent Stanley Kubrick his Probe 16 (AB/4) for use in filming in 1971. In the movie, it’s referred to as the “Durango 95!”

BEST OF SHOW Episode?? This MERCEDES BENZ 600 PULLMAN LIMO CONVERTIBLE spotted at Supercar Sunday! WATCH!!

New BJ AND THE BEAR, BTTF Vette & Borgwards in the Wild!!

The culprit responsible for starting the CB Craze in the 70’s and 80’s was a show that only lasted 2 years… and it was BJ AND THE BEAR. BJ and the Bear was an Action Comedy series that aired on NBC from February 1979 to May 1981. Created by Glen Larson, the series starred Greg Evigan and was produced when the CB Radio and Trucking craze had peaked in the United States.

Following the series were films like MOVIN’ ON, WHITE LINE FEVER, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT and EVERY WHICH WAY BY LOOSE. The show really set a trend and now the Kenworth K100 is IN THE GARAGE with an all-new Fireball MASTERPRINT!

Also featured is Fireball’s Back the Future Vette which is a stable here in the Garage it seems. Turning EVERYTHING into Time Machines! Plus a Wacky Sketch called BIG SKY RACER! Should Fireball do a Wacky Book?

Today’s BEST OF SHOW were several BORGWARDS spotted in the Wild!!

The BORGWARD ISABELLA was manufactured from 1954 to 1962 and was to have been marketed as the Borgward Hansa 1500, but the Isabella name was used on test vehicles and proved popular with engineering staff and media. The production car was subsequently renamed and only the first few hundred examples were built without Isabella badging. Hansa badging was also used through to 1957.

VACATION TRUCKSTER, Shark Attack and the MYSTERY of 2125…

One of the most famous MOVIE CARS on the planet isn’t driven by a MAN IN BLACK. It’s the National Lampoon TRUCKSTER from FAMILY VACATION! And that… is driven by Clark Griswold. But what makes the Truckster so unique? It’s the most extreme… and weirdest Station Wagon ever built.

The car was a heavily modified 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire Wagon built by Warner Bros, the movie being released on July 29, 1983. It created a massive uptick in Family Vacations across the country… and a few people trying to jump their wagons. (That didn’t end well, but looked pretty good on video. 😉 When was the last time you WATCHED IT??

Today, Fireball launches an all new MASTERPRINT along with several other TRUCKSTER items! Check ’em out!

Also on today’s blast is a SHARK ATTACK SKETCH, inspired for a Coloring Book. The AMPHICAR Model 770 is all amphibious and was was launched at the 1961 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW. It was made in West Germany from 1961 to 1968, with production ceasing in 1965. And yes… it worked.

Next up is the MYSTERY OF 2125. No one really knows where this location exists, but some say that although it looks outside, it’s really deep inside the Caves of Maine. And what do they do at 2125? Well, Fireball knows… but he’s not telling, because he started it. But of you ask him, he’ll distract you with HOT WHEELS, give you a Cookie and maybe tell you a Top Secret Story. But we do know that 2125 began as a secret Mason Temple and is now rumored to be the home of the ARTISAN SPEC, highest order of the Illuminati. But hey, you didn’t hear it from us.

CLASSIC COOL is here!!! Check out all the BEST in Classic TV Wear! MORE coming every day!

Fireball’s CAR SHOW SCHEDULE has be UPDATED! Check it out!!

And finally, today’s BEST OF SHOW is a 650hp, Suicide Door ’55 CHEVY that’s outta control!! WATCH!!

Fireball whipsnaps LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH Supercar Concept Art

1979 Lamborghini Countach Concept Art in the Fireball Tim Garage

In the world of automobiles, few things evoke the same sense of awe and admiration as supercars. These high-performance machines represent the pinnacle of automotive engineering, combining breathtaking speed, cutting-edge technology, and jaw-dropping design. Among the pantheon of supercars, the 1979 LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH stands out as a true unicorn car, embodying the mystique and allure that define this elite class of vehicles.

And today… the Lambo has slipped into the Garage with Fireball’s awesome NEW SKETCH! GO NOW!

The Lamborghini Countach emerged during a golden era of automotive rivalry, particularly the legendary war between Lamborghini and Ferrari. While Ferrari was renowned for its elegance and refinement, Lamborghini epitomized raw power and audacious design. The Countach was the quintessential manifestation of Lamborghini’s ethos, pushing the boundaries of speed and style like never before.

What set the Countach apart was its futuristic design language, characterized by sharp angles, dramatic lines, and a low-slung profile. Its iconic scissor doors added to its mystique, making it instantly recognizable and etching its image into the annals of automotive history. With its mid-engine layout and powerful V12 engine, the Countach delivered blistering performance that left competitors in the dust.

But the allure of the Lamborghini Countach extended beyond its performance capabilities. It became a cultural icon, immortalized in films like The Cannonball Run,” where it captured the imaginations of enthusiasts around the world. Its presence on the silver screen only heightened its mystique, cementing its status as the ultimate dream car for generations of car aficionados.

Part of what makes the Countach and other supercars so captivating is their exclusivity. These are not mere modes of transportation; they are symbols of wealth, power, and status. Owning a supercar is a statement, a declaration of one’s discerning taste and appreciation for the finer things in life.

Even today, the allure of the Lamborghini Countach remains undiminished. It continues to inspire awe and admiration, its timeless design serving as a testament to the enduring appeal of supercars. For those fortunate enough to experience its exhilarating performance and breathtaking beauty, the Countach represents the pinnacle of automotive excellence—a true unicorn car that captures the imagination and stirs the soul like no other.
