DID YOU KNOW?? The Police Interceptor from MAD MAX started out as a standard white Cleveland V8, 351 cu. in. dual-overhead cam, 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Hardtop. The movie’s art director Jon Dowding designed the Interceptor and commissioned Melbourne-based car customizers Graf-X International to modify the GT Falcon. The second Interceptor was more tricked out than the original… with larger custom gas tanks. It was destroyed in Mad Max 2. Wups. The Interceptor used in the 2015 remake, Mad Max Fury Road, was built by the same person who restored the original car. It was also destroyed at the end of the movie. Are we seeing a pattern??

DID YOU KNOW?? Spielberg praised how the truck was handled in an exceptionally safe manner by 50 year old stunt driver Carey Loftin. Although it appears the truck is driving at a recklessly unsafe speed along the winding California roads, it is actually not going more than 30 mph! Only one truck was used while filming the original TV movie, which was famously destroyed when it plunged off a cliff at the end. But after Duel aired on TV, Universal wanted to release it in theaters, and 74 minutes was too short for a theatrical release, so additional scenes were filmed.

DID YOU KNOW?? Most people think that BMW started as “Bavarian Motorworks,” but… nope. Originally named Bayerische Flugzeugwerke or “BFW,” meaning Bavarian Plane Manufacturing, the company eventually changed its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) in 1917!! Yea, Germans do that…

The BORGWARDS Isabella was one of the most popular German premium models in the 1950s. The brand was revived in the 21st century, with the Stuttgart-based Borgward Group AG designing and marketing them and manufactured in China. But after struggling to remain solvent, it filed for bankruptcy in 2022. Adios German Cars made in China… Time to make Fur-Covered Toilets.

Badass BEATNIK BANDIT, Hells Dept and Ponch enter the Garage
As you know, I’m a BIG DIECAST GUY and my Collection in the 805 is epic. My goal has always been to SKETCH the entire line of Sweet Sixteens and I’m still workin’ on it. But today, it’s all about the BEATNIK BANDIT.
The original Beatnik Bandit was a custom car created in 1961 by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. The car features a clear bubble canopy, speed and directionally controlled by a central joystick that ended up in multiple SPECTRAFLAME Colors by Hot Wheels in ’69! Which one do YOU have? Today’s B&W SKETCH is HELLS DEPT which was an original for the DIECAST DEMONS Coloring Book with Diecast Heroes!

The last remaining BANDIT ONE is still a Movie Car Mystery
Four modified BANDIT TRANS AM’s were used in the filming of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. Three were DESTROYED during production, but the fourth hero car disappeared… like Stallone’s COBRA which was eventually found. But to this day, no one really knows where it went… Maybe it’s still runnin’ MOONSHINE??
Most of the filming took place in Georgia and the South, but pickup shots were filmed in my home town of OJAI, CA. In fact, I was riding my bike in the mid-seventies through town and I saw a BLACK TRANS AM blast past me down Main St, flip a U… and then do it again. Only to discover that there were Cameras filming near our local Gas Station. They did the shots several times more as I watched the T/A and the Screaming Chicken blow through the station and down the main drag past Frostee Freeze. Pretty sure I’m in that shot somewhere!
I was in Elementary School at the time and on my way into town to buy some Mercury Dimes from a local Indian Seller. A super old fart that loved selling me way too overpriced coins. But I was a Collector, so I was in.
