FIRE!! Holidays, Ark 2, ATeam, Tony Dow & we lose GIL GERARD

Good morning, you SLITHERING STHUCKATASHES and welcome to AUTOMOTIVE POP CULTURE!! It’s hump-day and we celebrate with Fireball’s recent Commission for the LA CITY FIRE!! It’s a 1940’s AERIAL LADDER FIRETRUCK called LIGHTFORCE!! And it’s HOT!!

DID YOU KNOW?? 1940’s Aerial Ladder Trucks were often powerful, all-steel firsts (like Seagrave’s V-12s), featured unique designs, sometimes used as makeshift TVs with antennas for sports and transitioned from horse-drawn concepts to modern power. Though they lacked today’s safety features, relying on massive ground ladders and crew ingenuity, many were “tiller trucks,” needing two operators (a driver and a rear tiller) to steer the long rigs around tight city streets. These trucks bridged the gap between old horse-drawn methods and modern apparatus, proving aerials’ worth in major fires like Boston’s Cocoanut Grove in 1942.

And meanwhile, ON PLANET FIREBALL… Kim hands out Hot Wheels to kids at the recent 2025 HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS PARADE, the ARK II MUGSHOT is NOW AVAILABLE, B.A. Barakus’ A-TEAM VAN… SKETCHED, The Official TONY DOW (Leave it to Beaver) Celebrity Coloring Book is the full story and sadly… the world loses BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY’S Gil Gerard.

BONUS SKETCH! The Mummy, Bonkers Capri & Tony Dow…

I’ve always been fascinated with movies that would have been better with a Cool Car. But sometimes, my pen gets a bit bonkers, like in today’s case. I wondered what THE MUMMY would be driving, so… here’s a bit of MUMMY MUSCLE for you guys! Spot the Ark of the Covenant??

Plus, a heavily modded Ford Capri that I spotted recently in the wild and a shot of my two best peeps. Bruce Meyer from THE PETE and best friend TONY DOW before he passed. We did a ton of Car Shows together.

Fireball makes good on a TONY DOW PLYMOUTH FURY WISH…

Many of you know that TONY DOW was one of my best friends. I miss him. But in some of thousands of conversations over the years, it was clear that Tony was a CAR GUY as his stories ranged from his first CORVAIR that he had in High School to the PLYMOUTHS on his show, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. And although the show featured many cars including the four-dor BELVEDERE, Tony expressed his desire to producers to have this car… the 1960 PLYMOUTH FURY COUPE in Aqua Blue. For the majority of its run, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER was a Chrysler-sponsored show and Ward generally drove the Plymouth Fury four-door sedan, but not the coupe and since the show was Black and White… Color didn’t matter so much.

Although the Producers never made good on his request for the Fury Coupe, Tony’s favorite Plymouth stuck in my mind for years as we went to Car Shows… so…

Today I make good on Tony’s favorite car with a Fireball SKETCH! The 1960 PLYMOUTH FURY COUPE was a stellar design. It’s 310hp SonoRamic-powered pointed toward the future and solidified a streamlined Jet Age coming to fruition. The Plymouths were designed under the direction of Virgil M. Exner, who was in his final days leading the Chrysler design department and it was an exciting time for them.

LEAVE IT TO BEAVER was mid-season in their run (1957-1963) and at it’s height when this ’60 Chrysler appeared and Tony wanted it. But Plymouth had already given them multiple cars and the Coupe never made it into Tony’s hands. If it did, he would have kept it and it may have stayed in his garage for years. But instead, his Corvair came back to him after 50 years and we restored that.

Remembering TONY DOW and his love of CARS…

Tony was a good friend for a lot of years. And like me, he loved all sorts of cars… and we went to many car shows. But it’s the people that we enjoyed the most. You guys. Guys and Girls who love cars like we do and the adventures they take us on. So regardless of how the world is changing and it is… spend time with your friends and their cars. You don’t know how much time you’ll have left, so do it now.
