THE MIND MACHINE by Ethan Lawrence
Shasta Wilson is fast in the hundred yard and the mile, the greatest hope for her college coach who believes she can beat the best runners from other countries in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But something devastating occurs to keep her out of the running. She is badly injured in an accident that leaves her paralyzed from the waist down.
In a rehabilitation center, Shasta is suicidal, believing she will never run again, until David Arnold, a scientist from the university’s research facility, works his way into her life. He sees Shasta as the means of new hope, and tries to convince her to help him with a theory he has been working on.
“You could help prove my work is real and provide yourself with a new way of running despite your paralysis.”
“That’s impossible. I can never walk again!”
But David goes on to explain his work in the “bicameral mind” or neurological command, in which a person is capable of activating neural activity in the dominant left hemisphere of the brain and separate consciousness.”
“Separate consciousness?”
“Some used to call it OOBE – an “out of body experience.”
Shasta has heard enough, tries to push her wheelchair away from the delusional man. The embittered girl wants nothing to do with David or this preposterous theory.
But David persists with his bright hopeful manner and his intelligence.
“It’s more than just achieving an altered state of consciousness. At a more rarefied level, it is a peak experience that brings some people beyond just an out-of-body-experience.”
“How do you do it,” asks a still disbelieving Shasta.
“I employ something I like to call ‘The Mind Machine’. It uses mostly illegal technology to allow subjects to obtain higher levels of existence by leaving their broken bodies behind.”
“Forever?”
“That’s entirely up to you, Shasta. But something tells me you won’t want to come back once you’ve tried it.
In David’s lab, he explains how he has been attempting to explore other realities, and finding the secrets hidden in our minds. With nothing to lose, Shasta agrees to a regime of training for her brain. It’s required to separate her contact with material reality that is in every way as difficult as her early physical training for the Summer Olympics.
But with David’s dogged persistence and vast knowledge of ‘The Mind Machine’, Shasta begins to achieve that “out-of-body experience” by reaching the right brain state so that her astral self can detach from her paralyzed physical body and run again. It is like nothing Shasta could have imagined – a passing from flesh to a resonance with the universe. Both she and David are ecstatic as they achieve the proof of his theory while, at the same time, falling in love.
But while Shasta is filled with a renewed feeling of having experienced a rare accomplishment, it has unexpectedly exposed her to dark shadowy figures lost to history – “astral demons.” These harbingers of death have always existed in the astral plane and Shasta and David have unwittingly opened a doorway for them to our world. It is clear that this powerful force threatens the survival of humanity and Shasta is all that stands between them and us.

Excerpt from an article in the Los Angeles Times, September 4, 2049:
STOCKBROKER SUSPECT CLAIMS INNOCENCE
He had lost his wife and was inconsolable. Then, he saw the ad for the Newmate Institute online and John Morgan, a Los Angeles stockbroker, decided to use re-captured cells from his wife to clone not one, but three wives in the exact same image. Turns out, however, it had nothing to do with grief, money or success, but rather the LIFESTYLE he wanted to enjoy. Since he needed someone to host the lavish parties he wanted to throw and, since his work with clients was 98% of the time online, he needed someone to share the load. Apparently he needed the third clone simply as a “trophy wife” whom he could show off to his friends.
Unfortunately, the first clone became insanely jealous and shot the other two cloned wives. She has been indicted on two charges of murder and John Morgan is also in prison, having been arraigned on charges of polygamy, which has been the unlawful specific practice of one man taking several wives in North America since the mid-nineteenth century.

The galaxy was remote in both time and place. It existed as it had existed a million years ago. The planets of the woman’s galaxy were borne at the dawn of time, a time so removed from our concepts of time as to be incomprehensible. Nations, politics, war and disease were no part of the structure of their society, and evil almost totally eradicated. Her planet, entirely female, was an exquisitely perfect world of rich forests and seas, of elegant cities, and perfect human society, where the magical laws of harmony with the world were completely achieved. This was not merely a bland, dream-like state of contentment, but a highly practical way of life. Her women were brilliant in all fields, in architecture, the arts, scientific knowledge, as well as being completely unified in their religious and magical life. And this perfection had endured for ages.
She was born in the great forest of Rykan, an immense wilderness on the edge of the largest city of her planet’s continent. Her heritage was both cultural and metaphysical, the wisdom of natural magic bringing her in harmonious accord with her environment and the living beings around them. From infancy, the woman lived with animals, learning their traits such as biological defenses and more efficient sensory uses.
The women of her world had long known that the processes of creation and construction were all dependent upon the power of compassion. To them, compassion was a sacred science and benevolence was the building blocks of all physical manifestation. To her world, the future development of the human race had been toward a gentle harmony of the galaxies, and the kindness born out of their mastery of humanity had become a tremendous factor in lifting the consciousness of humans into a true perception of the need for that universal accord.
But it was also the corruption of this science of compassion, which led to a galactic war with a race of violent and compassionless men. Similar to the women, the men reproduced asexually and had never been in contact with the opposite sex before. One man, their leader, was creating discordant emotion and destructive passions that had been eliminated from the woman’s society long ago. He was introducing hatred, lust and fear through discord into the physical bodies of the women who disagreed with him. This being a capital offense, the male leader was brought to trial, but since there was no death penalty, he was sentenced by the woman to roam an eternity in an astral plane of existence. But the man was far more ingenious than she realized and found a way back into the physical world, into his physical body. Seeking revenge, he attacked the woman and they crash-landed together on a tiny lush planet uninhabited by intelligent life. They barely survived, but there was no escaping the remote planet at the edge of the universe.
“Are you going to kill me?” she asked.
His face darkened as his soulless eyes stared at her. “Yes.”
Strangely, she seemed unafraid now. “My people have a saying. ‘If we have no compassion, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other’.”
“I belong to my world, not yours. Yours tried to banish me.”
“Only because you brought discord to us. We had no choice.”
“Well,” he said after a moment, anger growing in his voice. “I give you the choice of how you will die on this desolate planet.”
She suddenly looked content. “I choose to die as friends. What is your name?”
The man paused, amused by her odd request. “Adam. What is your name?”
The woman smiled warmly. “My name is Eve.”
