The Corvair was manufactured and marketed in 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, convertible, 4-door station wagon, passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck body styles in its first generation (1960–1964) and as a 2-door coupe, convertible or 4-door hardtop in its second (1965–1969) – with a total production of approximately 1.8 million from 1960 until 1969.

CORVAIR CAR SHOW WITH LEAVE IT TO BEAVER TONY DOW! – FIREBALL MALIBU VLOG 673

CORVAIR SHOW WITH LEAVE IT TO BEAVER TONY DOW – FIREBALL MALIBU VLOG 673 – Fireball and Tony Dow (Leave it to Beaver) head to The Automobile Driving Museum for an all Corvair car Show.

WATCH!

About The Chevrolet Corvair from WIKI…  A compact automobile manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet for model years 1960–1969 over two generations.

As the only American-designed, mass-produced passenger car to use a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, the Corvair model range included a two-door coupe, convertible, four-door sedan, and four-door station wagon body styles, as well as passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck variants.

The Corvair competed with imported cars such as the original Volkswagen Beetle as well as the Ford Falcon, Plymouth Valiant, Studebaker Lark and the Rambler American.

The Corvair’s legacy was affected by controversy surrounding its handling, scrutinized in Ralph Nader’s Unsafe at Any Speed, along with the then GM’s top management resorting to unethical measures to handle the issue…

…as well as a 1972 Texas A&M University safety commission report for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which found that the 1960–1963 Corvair possessed no greater potential for loss of control in extreme situations than its contemporaries.

The name “Corvair” is a portmanteau of Corvette and Bel Air.

The name was first applied in 1954 to a Corvette-based concept with a hardtop fastback-styled roof.

TONY DOW 1962 CHEVY CORVAIR! – FIREBALL MALIBU VLOG 607

A day filled with activities as Fireball drops his son at LAX, then heads to the home of Actor TONY DOW (#LeaveItToBeaver) for lunch, then comes upon an accident on PCH in Malibu.

From WIKI… Tony Lee Dow (born April 13, 1945) is an American film producer, director, sculptor, and television actor.

Dow is best known for his role in the television sitcom Leave It to Beaver, which ran in primetime from 1957 to 1963. Dow played Wally Cleaver, the elder son of June (played by Barbara Billingsley) and Ward Cleaver (played by Hugh Beaumont) and the brother of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver (played by Jerry Mathers).

Dow was born in Hollywood, California, to John Stevens Dow, Jr. (1908–1987), a designer and general contractor, and Muriel Virginia Dow (née Montrose) (May 27, 1906 – April 30, 2001), a stunt woman in early Westerns and Clara Bow’s movie double in Hollywood. In his youth, Dow was a Junior Olympics diving champion. He won the role of Wally Cleaver in a casting call with almost no previous acting experience.

Dow acted in the series until it ended in 1963. After that, he appeared in the television series My Three Sons, Dr. Kildare, Mr. Novak (five episodes in three different roles), The Greatest Show on Earth, and Never Too Young. From 1965 to 1968, he served in the National Guard, interrupting his acting career. On his return to acting, he was a guest star in the television series Adam-12, Love American Style, Knight Rider, Square Pegs, The Mod Squad, The Hardy Boys, and Emergency!.

During the 1970s, Dow continued acting while working in the construction industry and studying journalism and filmmaking.

In 1987, he was honored by the Young Artist Foundation with its Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award for his role as Wally Cleaver.

Dow’s most recent screen appearance was in the 2003 film Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.

He has been married to his wife, Lauren, since 1980. They have one child and two grandchildren.

Fireball makes good on a TONY DOW PLYMOUTH FURY WISH…

Many of you know that TONY DOW was one of my best friends. I miss him. But in some of thousands of conversations over the years, it was clear that Tony was a CAR GUY as his stories ranged from his first CORVAIR that he had in High School to the PLYMOUTHS on his show, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. And although the show featured many cars including the four-dor BELVEDERE, Tony expressed his desire to producers to have this car… the 1960 PLYMOUTH FURY COUPE in Aqua Blue. For the majority of its run, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER was a Chrysler-sponsored show and Ward generally drove the Plymouth Fury four-door sedan, but not the coupe and since the show was Black and White… Color didn’t matter so much.

Although the Producers never made good on his request for the Fury Coupe, Tony’s favorite Plymouth stuck in my mind for years as we went to Car Shows… so…

Today I make good on Tony’s favorite car with a Fireball SKETCH! The 1960 PLYMOUTH FURY COUPE was a stellar design. It’s 310hp SonoRamic-powered pointed toward the future and solidified a streamlined Jet Age coming to fruition. The Plymouths were designed under the direction of Virgil M. Exner, who was in his final days leading the Chrysler design department and it was an exciting time for them.

LEAVE IT TO BEAVER was mid-season in their run (1957-1963) and at it’s height when this ’60 Chrysler appeared and Tony wanted it. But Plymouth had already given them multiple cars and the Coupe never made it into Tony’s hands. If it did, he would have kept it and it may have stayed in his garage for years. But instead, his Corvair came back to him after 50 years and we restored that.
