DID YOU KNOW?? Son of the Mask is notable for replacing Jim Carrey with Jamie Kennedy as the main character, a change that was widely disliked by audiences and critics. The film also significantly alters the established rules of the Mask, allowing it to function during the day, a departure from the original movie. Additionally, the film was shot in both Australia and California and featured the villain Loki, who was ordered to find the Mask and the baby born with its powers.

DID YOU KNOW?? The 1970s series The Persuaders hit massive popularity in the UK and the US and was only overshadowed by its immense success in Europe, particularly Germany and France. It was re-dubbed with new, witty dialogue! Tony Curtis was arrested for marijuana possession upon arriving in the UK to start filming and Roger Moore chose not to drive an Aston Martin in the series, despite the car being his character’s. Instead, he preferred his own production car! The show’s cancellation in the US allowed Roger Moore to accept the role of James Bond, and its opening credits featured a childhood photo of his son, Geoffrey Moore… rather than Moore himself.

DID YOU KNOW?? Burt Reynolds performed some high-speed stunts himself in Smokey and the Bandit despite studio fears, and the film’s director, Hal Needham, was an experienced stuntman who insisted on practical effects over CGI. The film’s success boosted the sales of the Pontiac Trans Am, and the character of Sheriff Buford T. Justice was inspired by a real Florida Highway Patrolman Burt Reynolds’s father knew. Additionally, Burt Reynolds was originally supposed to play the Snowman, but he wanted the role of the Bandit, leading to Jerry Reed taking the Snowman part. Of the four Trans Ams provided for the movie, three were destroyed during filming, leaving only one surviving car.

Scooby’s creator, Iwao Takamoto, gave him opposite physical traits to a stereotypical Great Dane, and Shaggy’s real name is Norville. The show was originally planned to be called “Mystery Five” before focusing on the dog and being renamed “Scooby Doo, Where Are You?”

What’s up you STUPENDOUS STREAKERS and welcome to today’s AUTOMOTIVE POP CULTURE!! And to launch this Monday, let’s rip it with ROBOCOP ART! Fireball’s done up the Taurus Cop Car from the original, plus… a bit of BLOOD SPATTER to boot!
DID YOU KNOW?? The Ford Taurus used in RoboCop were modified, early pre-production models of the first-generation sedan, painted matte black and outfitted with police equipment like push bars, light bars, and spotlights to create a futuristic look.The cars were so futuristic that the original concept for the film’s police cruisers was an ultra-expensive, jet-powered vehicle, but the filmmakers opted for the Taurus to keep costs down and ground the film’s visuals in reality. The association with the violent film reportedly upset Ford, but it also contributed to the car’s legacy as a memorable sci-fi vehicle.

Bob Gurr is a legendary Imagineer who designed iconic Disney attractions like the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Monorails, and also the original vehicles for the Autopia and Haunted Mansion’s Doom Buggies. Beyond Disney, he designed the King Kong animatronic for Universal Studios, the flying UFO for the 1984 Olympics, effects for Michael Jackson’s Victory Tour, and consulted on Jurassic Park. Gurr, now in his 90’s, remains active, giving Disney history tours, mentoring, and still working on new projects to this day.

IN THE NEWS… Hollywood Icon ROBERT REDFORD passes away to join PAUL NEWMAN on their next journey.
Robert Redford was a car enthusiast who loved Porsches, particularly the mid-engined Porsche 904 GTS, which he owned for nearly a decade. He was known for his legendary prank wars with fellow actor Paul Newman, which often involved car-related pranks, including Redford once famously gifting Newman a wrecked Porsche. Redford also drove various Porsches in films, such as the “Bahama Yellow” Porsche 911 with a ski rack in the 1969 movie DOWNHILL RACER.

DID YOU KNOW?? The Ferraris in Miami Vice were initially Corvette-based replicas of a Daytona Spider, a situation that led to Ferrari filing a lawsuit for trademark infringement. To resolve this, Ferrari provided two 1986 Testarossas for free, with the condition that the fake Daytona be destroyed on-screen, which happened in the season 3 premiere. The two Testarossas were originally black but were repainted white for better visibility in night scenes, and a separate Pantera-based replica car was built for stunt work.

DID YOU KNOW?? The Volkswagen bus (also known as the Type 2, Kombi or Bulli) is that its first engine was only 25 horsepower, the same as a Beetle. And to give it enough torque to move its heavier weight, engineers used a special type of rear axle called portal axles, which were originally developed for a wartime vehicle to provide more ground clearance. It wasn’t created by a Volkswagen engineer, but by a Dutch importer. While touring the Wolfsburg factory, he saw a makeshift parts-hauler and sketched out an idea that would eventually become the iconic Type 2 Van. Inspired by the Plattenwagen’s efficiency, Ben Pon drew a rough sketch in his notebook of a box-shaped van with the driver sitting in the very front. Though it took some time for the busy factory to act on the idea, Pon’s original sketch became the foundation for the famous Volkswagen Type 2… which went into production in 1950.
